Charlie Ayers’ Calafia Café

… but which syllable is stressed?

braised greens & almond butter
(in addition to greens and butter, this side dish includes: chard, onions,
garlic, turmeric, mustard seeds, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, and lime juice)
Joe said it’s like something he’d make for himself at home.
$5

Queen Calafia’s cheeseburger; shoestring fries
The only meat’n'potatoes option on the menu.
$11

fiery bottom BBQ pork rice bowl
shredded pork shoulder with spicy bbq sauce, brown rice, wilted baby spinach,
roasted yams, sunnyside-up quail egg & micro greens
$10.75

After 5 PM they dim the lights and replace each table’s potted plant with a candle.
Then, just as smoothly, every entrée becomes a bit more expensive.

cinnamon chocolate-chip cookies
$7

This is supposed to be a variety platter of cookies; however, I hate both peanut butter and raisins, so I asked for an entire plate of the cinnamon chocolate-chip. They were neither soft nor warm– a bland, overpriced end to an otherwise delectable, affordable lunch.

Since it was my birthday weekend and all, I relaxed my New Year’s ban on carbonated beverages and ordered a coke. … and then I learned from the waiter that Calafia only serves agave-based colas, which I hadn’t had before (it tasted just like Coca-Cola Classic but with a hint of honey). Guilt-free soda consumption makes up for the crummy dessert! I’m declaring Calafia my new favorite restaurant (sorry, Pluto’s).

printemps

i never mind my commute in the spring, because i stop here and have lunch.
