I visited the California Academy of Sciences last weekend, and my best discovery — even better than the albino alligator with the amputated pinky toe — was this man’s face, peering out from the treetop railing that separated him from the canopy of the museum’s indoor rainforest.

I watched him from the understory; this is my lens at its zoomiest. I only caught the last 30 seconds of this moment, and after ten seconds of trying to take pictures, I gave up and just watched him. The shots I got are technically terrible because I’m a nonphotographer with little grasp of how cameras work, yet I still insist on using full manual settings, even in emergencies like this one.

I can’t express exactly what it is I’m looking for — out of life or out of my $20 admissions ticket — but I know that it includes moments like this one.
